Will recently completed his Level 4 Applications Support Lead apprenticeship with a Distinction. He began the programme in November 2024, working as part of the Service Delivery Team at his employer.

Building Broader IT Knowledge

Choosing an apprenticeship was an easy decision for Will, who saw it as an opportunity to expand his understanding of IT beyond his day-to-day role.

He chose to undertake an apprenticeship because he knew it would benefit his knowledge for wider IT departments, helping him gain a greater understanding of different areas of IT while developing new skills.

Developing New Skills

Reflecting on the areas where he has grown most during his apprenticeship, Will says…

“I have developed my project management, security and testing understanding, which I would say is important for my role now but also my future.”

Through the programme, Will broadened his technical knowledge and developed a deeper understanding of key areas that will support both his current role and future career progression.

Overcoming Challenges

Like many apprentices, Will faced challenges during his learning journey. The knowledge test proved to be one of the biggest hurdles throughout the programme.

However, through determination and hard work, he successfully completed the qualification while balancing workplace responsibilities and major projects. His commitment and resilience ultimately resulted in him achieving a Distinction.

Looking Ahead

Having completed his apprenticeship, Will is now focused on progressing into a new role and continuing his professional development. The qualification has helped put him on the path towards more senior opportunities in the future.

Employer Perspective

Will’s manager, Jen, shares her thoughts on his achievement and development throughout the programme…

“Completing the Level 4 apprenticeship is a significant achievement for Will and represents a considerable investment of time and effort alongside day-to-day responsibilities. The programme covered a wide range of IT disciplines and provided exposure to areas that are not typically part of Will’s current role. This offered an opportunity to gain a broader understanding of how different functions within an IT department work together and contribute to delivering services and projects. The course was challenging at times due to the breadth of subjects covered and the commitment required to complete the assignments. Throughout the programme, Will approached the work with dedication and professionalism, putting significant effort into his studies and taking the opportunity seriously. Completing the apprenticeship has broadened his knowledge across a number of areas and provided valuable experience that he can build on in the future. It marks an important milestone in his professional development and demonstrates a strong commitment to continuous learning and personal growth.”

Support and Learning Experience

Will describes his learning experience with LearnTech and his tutor, Ash, as “exceptional”. He particularly enjoyed the online training and found Ash’s delivery style helped make learning accessible and engaging throughout the programme.

He says…

“I would like to thank Ashley Williams so much and I can’t talk highly enough about him! He made my apprenticeship much easier by the way he taught the lessons and how he was during 1 to 1’s with me. Ash was really helpful and understanding throughout the apprenticeship (even when I did annoy him)!”

Trainer Reflection

Will’s LearnTech tutor, Ash, reflects on his progress throughout the apprenticeship…

“Will joined the programme having already successfully completed a Level 3 apprenticeship, and it was clear from the outset that he had the drive and determination to continue developing himself. Throughout the programme, Will consistently pushed himself to learn new things, understand unfamiliar concepts and apply them within his day-to-day role. He was never content with simply knowing what to do. He wanted to understand why it mattered, how it could be used effectively and what value it would bring to his work. Will faced several challenges along the way, both personally and within the workplace, but his commitment never wavered. He approached his projects thoughtfully, demonstrated a strong ability to reflect on his work and actively sought feedback to help him improve. His portfolio showcased his strengths in problem-solving, documentation, application and user support. At times, Will could underestimate his own knowledge and second-guess himself, so seeing his confidence grow alongside his ability to manage work independently was one of the most rewarding parts of supporting him. Will thoroughly earned his Distinction through his effort, resilience and genuine desire to succeed. He was an excellent apprentice to teach and mentor, and his organisation is extremely fortunate to have someone with his attitude, ability and potential.”
