When Dylan joined Avius as a Level 4 Software Developer apprentice in February 2024, he knew he wanted more than just a qualification. He wanted to gain genuine capability and confidence in his craft and create a pathway into higher education. Eighteen months later, in August 2025, Dylan completed his apprenticeship with a well-deserved distinction, a testament to his dedication, growth and real contributions within the Avius Development Team. He continues to be employed by Avius.
Why Dylan Chose the Apprenticeship Route
For Dylan, an apprenticeship offered the best of both worlds – the chance to grow his technical skills on the job and the opportunity to earn a recognised qualification that would support his long-term academic ambitions.
“I chose to do an apprenticeship to gain knowledge that would lead to competence in my role, as well as the qualification that could take me to higher education.”
This blend of practical experience and structured learning was the foundation to his journey.
Tackling Challenges and Growing
Working as part of Avius’ Development Team, Dylan was faced with new technologies and patterns. These challenges expanded his understanding, broadened his skill set and strengthened his confidence.
Dylan highlights communication, software design and technical terminology as some of the most important areas he developed throughout the programme – essential skills for collaborating effectively in software teams.
Delivering Real Value
One of Dylan’s proudest achievements was producing code valued by his colleagues, particularly his work on a disaster recovery system.
“My biggest success is being able to contribute code that is valued by the rest of the team.”
This contribution demonstrated not only technical ability, but also the trust and responsibility he earned within the team.
Support from LearnTech and his Technical Trainer
Throughout his apprenticeship, Dylan worked closely with LearnTech trainer Chris Livesey. Chris saw firsthand the dedication Dylan brought to every task and shared high praise for his accomplishments,
“Dylan demonstrated an outstanding work ethic throughout his time at LearnTech. He consistently demonstrated a remarkable commitment to his studies, tackling every challenge with determination and professionalism. His hard work has been rewarded with a well-deserved distinction, reflecting both his technical ability and his passion for learning. It has been a pleasure to have him on the programme, and I wish Dylan the very best in the future.”
Dylan also valued the support available whenever he needed it,
“Whenever I felt lost, there was always a swift response to remediate any issues.”
Live online training was a fresh experience for Dylan. While different from traditional classroom environments, he found the sessions engaging, convenient and effective.
A Word from Dylan’s Manager
Dylan’s manager, Jon, also reflected on Dylan’s journey and the wider impact of taking on their first apprentice,
“He was the first apprentice we’d taken on, and it was as much a learning experience for the company as for Dylan. It has certainly sold us on the benefits of apprenticeships, and we see it as a great way to recruit and develop new employees. The return on investment is worth it, but it’s also great to be able to do something to help people get started in the industry. Dylan was our first apprentice, he definitely won’t be the last.”
Looking Ahead
With his Level 4 apprenticeship successfully completed, Dylan is already expanding his knowledge further, having started a Level 5 apprenticeship. His commitment to continued learning reflects the determination and ambition that defined his entire Level 4 apprenticeship.
Advice for Future Apprentices
For anyone considering a similar path, Dylan offers simple but powerful encouragement,
“It is a great way to learn and gain a qualification all at the same time.”
His journey shows what’s possible when passion, hard work and structured support come together and sets a strong example for future apprentices ready to take their first steps into tech.
