Brad, Level 4 Cyber Security Technologist apprentice at Computeam, is proof that determination, curiosity and the right support can lead to remarkable success.

After completing a Level 3 Information Communications Technician apprenticeship, Brad started his Level 4 apprenticeship in November 2023. He began in Computeam’s Operations Team before transitioning into the Solutions Team, where his role became much more aligned with his passion for cybersecurity.

“Cyber security caught my interest about halfway through my Level 3 ICT apprenticeship,” Brad explains. “I knew then that was the direction I wanted to take.”

The desire to specialise came after completing his first apprenticeship, where Brad didn’t just learn about IT – he also discovered how to learn effectively. His passion to keep growing led him to progress onto Level 4, eager to dig deeper into the cyber security world.

Facing challenges and finding purpose

During the first few months of his Level 4 apprenticeship, Brad found it difficult to apply his training directly to his role. As a hybrid service desk and visiting technician, there was less opportunity to relate day-to-day work to the technical content he was learning.

That changed when he started working in the Solutions Team. One major project stood out – Brad was tasked with designing and building a cyber security auditing scheme from scratch, a complex, long initiative that helped the business meet a new KPI. That project is still a core part of Brad’s role today.

Skills that set him apart

When asked about his biggest areas of development, Brad didn’t hesitate,

“Firstly, communication. Changing teams meant I had to completely rethink how I spoke with both colleagues and clients. I developed a much more professional style and learned how to act like a cyber security professional.”

“Secondly, networking. Before my Level 4, I only knew the basics – what an IP address is or how a router works. But now I understand how networks operate and why they’re fundamental. One of my tutors said something that stuck with me, ‘Networking is the heart of everything we do in IT and cyber security.’  Since then, I’ve worked hard to develop those skills.“

“And lastly, problem-solving. I used to find log files terrifying! This apprenticeship has taught me how to identify problems, investigate and respond to them efficiently. Now I jump in with confidence, thanks to the security-first mindset I’ve developed over the last 18 months.”

A national champion in the making

Brad’s skills and confidence were put to the test in WorldSkills UK 2024, where he competed in the IT Support Technician category and took first place. He credits his success to the networking and problem-solving expertise developed during his apprenticeship.

And he’s not stopping there. Brad has already secured a spot in the Cyber Security finals at WorldSkills UK 2025. And we’ll be cheering him on every step of the way!

A positive learning experience

Brad describes his time with LearnTech as “a great experience”, full of support and opportunity. Access to training platforms, consistent encouragement and engaging online sessions have all played a key role in his progress.

“The live online sessions are brilliant. Both of my trainers are excellent at getting everyone involved. There’s a great balance between listening and hands-on practicals.”

His tutor, Alan Bailey, shares,

“Brad is an excellent learner, always willing to go the extra mile, supporting his peers and applying knowledge practically. He’s constantly upskilling, even outside the programme, using platforms like TryHackMe to deepen his understanding of cyber security. He’s proactive, committed and truly passionate about the field.”

Looking ahead

When asked about the future, Brad is keeping things open, but always forward-looking.

“I’ll probably take a short break from formal learning to reflect, but I’ll never stop pursuing new skills. I hope to lead the cyber security movement at Computeam in the future.”

Advice for future apprentices

Brad is clear about the value of apprenticeships.

“It’s definitely the way to go. Employers value experience and apprenticeships give you the freedom to learn what matters to you. The biggest benefit? Applying what you learn in a real working environment. If you don’t use it, you’ll lose it.”
