Jack began his Level 4 Data Analyst apprenticeship in September 2024 with Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust (LSCFT), joining the Business Intelligence Team. In under a year, he has already achieved amazing success – most notably winning the Northwest Skills Development Network Digital Apprentice of the Year award.
After leaving college, Jack was eager to gain hands-on experience while continuing his formal education, a balance he knew an apprenticeship could offer and one he saw as vital for long-term career development.
“Starting out, it was a steep learning curve getting to grips with the NHS and how LSCFT operates,”
Jack reflects.
“But the support I’ve had has been great, and the projects I’ve worked on have really helped build my skills.“
During his apprenticeship, Jack has developed strong skills in tools such as Power BI and SQL. One of his standout contributions has been redeveloping an existing Power BI dashboard, enhancing its functionality and impact.
His long-term ambition is clear – to secure a permanent role in business intelligence. And if the past few months are anything to go by, he’s well on his way.
Dean, Jack’s manager and Head of Business Intelligence at LSCFT, shared his thoughts,
“Jack has taken everything in his stride. He has a broad technical level of knowledge, picks up new technologies easily, and asks the right questions to support his learning. Jack has delivered a brilliant piece of work developing a protected characteristics dashboard within PowerBI, linking in with key stakeholders and delivering on their requirements. He’s not only been awarded runner-up in the Trust’s Non-Clinical Apprentice of the Year, but has also won the North West Digital Apprentice of the Year for 2025. We’re lucky to have Jack on the team and it’s personally been a genuine pleasure to manage and mentor him in his journey. I’ve absolutely no doubt that Jack will continue to thrive and have a tremendous career within Digital.“
Jack’s learning experience with LearnTech has also played a key role in his progress. He speaks highly of the programme’s structure and delivery, particularly the live online sessions.
His tutor, Joel, echoes this sentiment,
“Jack has done well in his apprenticeship so far. He’s a keen participant in training sessions, taking an active role by asking insightful questions, evidencing his attention to the topic. He’s also eager to share his knowledge and experience of topics related to data analytics and his field of work. This helps enrich the sessions for others and helps me as the trainer to better understand the context in which Jack applies his learning. Being highly commended during National Apprenticeship Week and now winning North West Digital Apprentice of the Year for 2025 are achievements he should be incredibly proud of.”
When asked what advice he’d give to anyone thinking about an apprenticeship, Jack keeps it simple,
“Do it – it will open up so many opportunities during and after completion.”
