Jason began his apprenticeship in October 2024, working as a Level 3 Information Communications Technician in his employer’s IT team. He successfully completed his apprenticeship with a Distinction, which is testament to his commitment, progress and hard work.

He decided on an apprenticeship to gain confidence in the workplace and build the skills he needed.

Troubleshooting and Problem-Solving

Commenting on one of the most interesting challenges he faced during his apprenticeship, Jason said…

“Troubleshooting a conference system on my own was probably my most interesting challenge. I learnt that the specifications of cables can make a much bigger difference than you might expect. Although Cat 7 has a higher bandwidth, the recommended Cat 6a was better suited to the system. Once I replaced the Cat 7 cable with Cat 6a, it resolved the issues we’d been having with the camera.”

Throughout his apprenticeship, Jason developed patience when helping people who were not tech savvy, as well as greater confidence in his ability to do his job. He also developed his troubleshooting knowledge and ability to find solutions when needed.

Jason successfully introduced spare, ready-to-use laptops for remote users who needed an emergency replacement, particularly if they called later in the day when there wasn’t enough time to set up a new laptop.

Having completed his apprenticeship, Jason would like to continue with his organisation and gain further qualifications related to support and server management.

A Manager’s Perspective

Chris, IT Manager, had this to say about Jason…

“Having Jason onboard these past 23 months has reduced the impact when my IT Technician or I am out of the business. Jason has been taking on first-line tickets/tasks, enabling us to focus on more projects and technical tasks. Jason has built a good working relationship within our small IT team and with internal/external associates, enabling us to provide faster support to the business. I’ve had lots of positive feedback on Jason’s work and attitude to supporting all. Since implementing the ServiceNow ticketing system, Jason has taken over a third of the ticket work. This work also involves the Corporate ITCOE system, where we need to log tickets for Corporate IT (Kenosha, Wisconsin) for assistance on issues we don’t have access to. He’s helped complete multiple projects since he started with us and overall, it’s been great to have Jason eager and ready to work on tickets or projects. Jason is always willing to help.”

Why LearnTech?

Describing his learning experience with his LearnTech tutors, Jason said…

“Aaran was pretty much perfect. Very encouraging, pushed me to get stuff done, and I felt like I wanted to do well to prove that I was as good as Aaran thought I was. If I was to do a future apprenticeship, I would 100% want Aaran as my mentor again. Live online training was very informative and a comfortable place to learn. I felt actively encouraged to learn and felt able to come to Michael with any questions, queries and concerns.”

A Tutor’s Thoughts

Aaron, Jason’s tutor made these comments…

“The growth in Jason’s confidence in a short space of time was nothing but remarkable. Jason’s hard work and commitment to the course was evident from day one. He thoroughly deserved his Distinction and was a pleasure to work with.”

Advice for Future Apprentices

When asked what he would say to anyone considering a tech apprenticeship, Jason said…

“It is far more practical than a college course. I got the same learning out of it but with some money and far more experience and more chance of a job after completion.”

Building Careers Through Apprenticeships

Jason’s apprenticeship has helped him build his technical knowledge and confidence while gaining valuable hands-on experience in an IT environment. Achieving a Distinction is a great way to complete his apprenticeship as he looks to continue developing his career and gain further qualifications.
