In November 2023, Matthew started his Level 4 Data Analyst apprenticeship with LearnTech while working at the Government of Jersey. His journey with the organisation began earlier, when he worked as an intern during his university studies. After graduating, Matthew joined the Analytics and Management Information Team via the apprenticeship scheme – providing an opportunity to upskill him and strengthen the team.
The Challenge
Starting out had it’s challenges as the Government of Jersey doesn’t use Python, nor is it permitted on work computers. To overcome this, LearnTech provided Matthew with a dedicated laptop. However, because Python wasn’t part of his daily role, not all the skills could be applied straight away.
This could have been a setback, but instead, it became a stepping stone. Matthew focused on developing other analytical skills, which he quickly began applying to real-world projects. The reports and dashboards he created grew more sophisticated, and with each one, his confidence grew too.
The Growth
Reflecting on the journey, Matthew says,
“Achieving a Distinction in this apprenticeship and being nominated for a Rising Star Award last year have been my biggest successes so far.”
His success is built on consistent effort, support from his tutors and employer, combined with a drive to keep improving. Matthew explains,
“I really enjoyed my learning experience and greatly appreciated the help provided by the tutors. Tutors were always available when I had questions and would work through any issues I was having. The online learning worked well, with the training being well structured.”
His tutor, Georgina, saw this determination from day one,
“When Matt joined the apprenticeship, he was brand new to his role, but you never would have guessed from the way he approached the programme. From the very start, he was proactive and engaged, taking every opportunity to learn something new and actively applying what he learned to his work. He even completed the programme three months ahead of schedule, which is a real testament to his hard work and dedication. I’m really pleased that Matt gained a Distinction – it’s thoroughly well-deserved!”
The Achievement
Completing his apprenticeship was more than just a qualification to Matthew. He has proven his ability, earned a promotion from Junior Analyst to Data Analyst and taken on more responsibility in leading projects.
Oliver, Senior Data Analyst at the Government of Jersey and Matthew’s manager, reflects on his progress,
“Since Matt started as an apprentice, we have witnessed him go from strength to strength. He has achieved a Distinction in his apprenticeship and always shows a willingness to learn. His promotion to Data Analyst on completion of his apprenticeship is a well-earned recognition of his growth and hard work.”
The Future
So, what advice would Matthew give to others considering a tech apprenticeship?
“The apprenticeship provides a great opportunity for new starters and younger employees coming out of uni or school. It allows adequate time to learn more about analytics and what you might encounter within the job.”
